Strengthening our Front Lines: Standing Together for Suicide Prevention Month

Every September during Suicide Prevention Month, the Utah Department of Veterans and Military Affairs (UDVMA) reaffirms a core military principle: no one fights alone.

Whether you are actively serving, in the Guard or Reserve, a veteran who has hung up the uniform, or a family member supporting those who serve remember operational stress, life transitions, and unseen wounds affect us all. Reaching out for support is never a sign of weakness—it is a smart, tactical decision to protect yourself and the people you love.

The following federal and state resources are available 24/7 to support Service Members, Veterans, and Families (SMVF) across Utah.

Critical Resources & Support Directory Immediate Crisis Support

  • Veterans Crisis Line: Free, confidential, 24/7 support for all veterans, service members, Guard, Reservists, and family members. VA health care enrollment is not required.

  • VA Health Care Mental Health Services: Connect with local Utah Suicide Prevention Coordinators, Vet Centers, and outpatient clinics through the local VA network.

Military & Service-Specific Programs

  • Defense Suicide Prevention Office (DSPO): Evidence-based tools tailored for active duty, Guard, and Reserve members to build resilience and navigate transitions.

  • Military OneSource: 24/7 non-medical counseling, peer support, and wellness resources for active service members, Guard/Reserve, and immediate families.

Utah State-Dedicated Resources

  • SafeUT National Guard & SafeUT App: Specialized, confidential crisis lines connecting guard members, service members, and families directly with clinicians trained in military culture.

Three Ways You Can Take Action This Month

  • Check on Your Battle Buddies: Reach out to a fellow service member or veteran you haven't spoken with recently. A simple call or text can make all the difference. Get ideas at We Face the Fight.

  • Learn the Warning Signs: Look out for sudden changes in behavior, social withdrawal, expressions of hopelessness, or increased substance use. Review specialized guides via Live On Utah's Military Playbooks.

  • Practice Lethal Means Safety: Secure firearms with safe storage options and dispose of unused medications. Putting time and distance between a moment of crisis and lethal means saves lives. Explore options at Safe Storage Utah or the VA Lethal Means Safety Page.
